Do you want a solid breakfast for a good start to the day? It should also be healthy and cheap - maybe even vegetarian or vegan?! Anyone who thinks that finding something like that in the old town center is a hopeless case, should head to the AHA Cafe at the Kreuzkirche. Sure, the sandwich with a coffee to go is available at every bakery right around the corner for €6-7, but at Aha you get really good quality, a quiet place in the sun and thus the better breakfast for the same money.
The AHA has been in Dresden for as long as I can remember. The nice thing about it is that you get regional quality here. The AHA sources all the ingredients used from regional retailers, i.e. either from the wholesaler Naturkost Erfurt or regional suppliers such as the organic farm in Mahlitzsch, the goat farm Lauterbach or the traditional bakery Heller. Sugar is only used here in unrefined form and the tea and coffee is generally fair trade. All vegetarians and vegans can look forward to this, as most of the varied offerings on the menu come without meat.
The location can only be recommended, as the extremely central location right next to the Altmarkt and Kreuzkirche is worth its weight in gold, especially for tourists. It is quiet and you will hardly be disturbed by car noise. In the summer months, you also get a lot of sun in the outdoor areas until around 12/1 p.m. Later, the curch will cast it's shadow.
I definitely got my “good breakfast” here. For a ridiculous €8 I had a large portion of scrambled eggs with lots of cheese and fresh herbs and organic herbal tea. Butter, salad and two thumb-thick slices of bread were also served. The egg wasn't watery, the ingredients were fresh and the bread, yes, the bread really blew me away! The flour and sourdough were of very high quality - really finely ground and well kneaded - not like the coarse stuff that the supermarkets trie to sell us as whole grain bread. The dough was juicy and airy, not at all sticky, and pleasantly filling.
To be honest, when the food came, I briefly thought to myself: "Well, will the two slices be enough?!". I can tell you, this breakfast got me through a long day with two big tours and no break. Exactly what I wanted. The AHA Cafe is worth recommending for that alone. In addition to breakfast in many variations, you can also get excellent soups, salads and many other delicious dishes for any time of the day.
